Cyclic strain hardening of nanocrystalline nickel

چکیده
We demonstrate cyclic strain hardening and frequency-dependent fatigue life in electrodeposited nanocrystalline Ni subjected to tension–tension cyclic deformation. These observations are rationalized through mechanistic arguments based on the exhaustion of dislocation sources in the early stages of cyclic loading and on the domination of diffusive processes during later stages. 2005 Acta Materialia Inc. Direct observation of Lomer-Cottrell Locks during strain hardening in nanocrystalline nickel by in situ TEM
Strain hardening capability is critical for metallic materials to achieve high ductility during plastic deformation. A majority of nanocrystalline metals, however, have inherently low work hardening capability with few exceptions. Interpretations on work hardening mechanisms in nanocrystalline metals are still controversial due to the lack of in situ experimental evidence. Here we report, by us...
متن کاملStrong strain hardening in nanocrystalline nickel.
Low strain hardening has hitherto been considered an intrinsic behavior for most nanocrystalline (NC) metals, due to their perceived inability to accumulate dislocations. In this Letter, we show strong strain hardening in NC nickel with a grain size of approximately 20 nm under large plastic strains. Contrary to common belief, we have observed significant dislocation accumulation in the grain i...

We present a comparative study of thermomechanical properties of nano-polycrystalline nickel (nano-Ni) and micrometer-polycrystalline nickel (micron-Ni) by in situ high pressure-temperature (P-T) diffraction experiments. The yield strength of 2.35 GPa for the nano-Ni measured under high-pressure triaxial compression is more than three times that of the micron-Ni value. Contrary to tensile exper...
متن کاملNanodomained Nickel Unite Nanocrystal Strength with Coarse-Grain Ductility
Conventional metals are routinely hardened by grain refinement or by cold working with the expense of their ductility. Recent nanostructuring strategies have attempted to evade this strength versus ductility trade-off, but the paradox persists. It has never been possible to combine the strength reachable in nanocrystalline metals with the large uniform tensile elongation characteristic of coars...
متن کاملConstitutive Model for Multi-laminate Induced Anisotropic Double Hardening Elastic-plasticity of Sand
A constitutive multi-laminate based elastic-plastic model developed to be capable of accounting induced anisotropic behavior of granular material such as sand. The fabric feature or grain orientation characteristic effects through medium are considered in a rational way under any complex stress path, including cyclic loading. The salient feature of the developed model is a non-associative on pl...
